34th Year Designing in the MIA Art In Bloom Minnesota

Consider adding a lightsaber-style bottle opener and Star Wars-inspired cocktails for an extra touch of creativity. We found this great Emperors Cabinet to store drinks in which would be a great feature in a home bar of any size. Client wanted a design that combined a star wars-esque feel and brewery. I chose to take a slightly different approach than my normal methods by hand drawing the design roughly leaving it imperfect and then allowing the software to vector my rough drawings.

And as I circled around that crowd, I saw the last end of the New York Police Department pulling away protesters and clearing out the last of the encampment. I think there was obviously a lot of intention in timing those two things. I think it’s inherently a critique on a political pressure and this congressional pressure that we saw build up against, of course, Claudine Gay at Harvard and Magill at UPenn. Yes, it certainly came as a surprise, especially at “Spectator.” We’re nerds of the University in the sense that we are familiar with faculty and University governance. But even to us, we had no idea where this policy was coming from. And this suspension was really the first time that it entered most students’ sphere.

And it says, I’m paraphrasing here, Hamas’ next targets. You have faculty, including professors, who are not necessarily sympathetic to the protesters’ view of the war, who are really outraged about what Shafik has done here. They feel that she’s crossed a boundary that hasn’t been crossed on Columbia’s campus in a really long time. And it’s a university on top of all that that has a real history of activism dating back to the 1960s. So when students are recruited or choose to come to Columbia, they’re actively opting into a campus that prides itself on being an activist community.

The Architecture of Star Wars: 7 Iconic Structures

On the Millennium Falcon, they are kept safe thanks to their control over the small space; on the Death Star they are able to escape because of the Empire's relative lack of control over their own domain. The pivotal architectural scene in the Death Star comes when Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia try to outrun the Stormtroopers and attempt to swing across a broken bridge. The production team had one Death Star set that was constructed, which was originally used for their swing, and was later redressed for Obi-Wan Kenobi’s scene in which he turns off the tractor beam. This particular scene is interesting because of the way it was shot. There are numerous camera angles from across, below and above that allows the audience to connect to the scene architecturally. Now for those who’re dedicated to collecting the most iconic memorabilia, take a look at this cool glass case with some great toys and models.

Some flag inspiration for people looking for something eclectic. If you’ve fully embraced the dark side, why not create a striking minimal bedroom workspace like this one. The purple background light and the red lightsaber make this room feel eerie, in an awesome way. We can’t talk about space-action-themed room design without mentioning lego figurines.

"You haven’t seen anything that beefy before. It felt like you had something that had a lot of engine to it to be able to handle that drop." In-world, Hype's prestigious racing record has netted him fame and fortune through numerous sponsors, represented in patches decorating his jumpsuit. It stands to reason that the cocky Rodian would also enjoy other trappings of wealth -- including a unique, customized droid. "He’d want to stand out. He’d want to be different," says Christenson.

They asked that the University divest from businesses that profit from Israel’s military operations in Gaza. But instead of making any progress, the protests are met with further crackdown by the University. The Republican Chairwoman of the Committee, Virginia Foxx, starts reminding her that there was a student who was actually hit with a stick on campus. There was another gathering more recently glorifying Hamas and other terrorist organizations, and the kind of chants that have become an everyday chorus on campus, which many Jewish students see as threatening. But when the questioning starts, President Shafik is ready. One of the first ones she gets is the one that tripped up her colleagues.

From the hum of a lightsaber to the roar of a TIE fighter, the sound effects and music of Star Wars are as iconic as the visuals. Star Wars is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts of millions of fans all over the world. From its iconic sound effects and music to its futuristic sets and locations, Star Wars has a distinct look and feel that sets it apart from other sci-fi movies. In this blog post, we will delve into the secrets behind the creation of the iconic Star Wars set designs and what makes the movie look the way it does.

There’s a lot you can do with small spaces, here’s a great Star Wars bedroom idea for small spaced rooms. The lightsabers on the wall look great and we can’t forget to mention the nice star effect on the back wall. Perhaps you will be inspired to paint your room the same. What’s a themed room without the wall posters to match.

It’s also important to note that the Death Star is ultimately destroyed in Episode IV; as a result, its only appearance is in this film, whereas the Millennium Falcon continues making an appearance in future films. In 1977, during a time when visual and digital effects were in its infancy, filmmakers used physical models in an effort to create a sense of authenticity. In Star Wars, we have a film that is both epic and intimate, a film where its architectural sets play a key role in its narrative and help establish a believable universe that exists on its own. Just two images that complete the space and remind everyone that the curator is a Star Wars fan. Perhaps the perfectly themed Star Wars bedroom isn’t the one with a lot of themed decor, but the one that uses minimal decor to make a big statement.

UCF Athletics announced in August 2020 that the stadium would officially be named the Bounce House for the 2020 football season. The company provided service to areas including Indianapolis, Central Florida (Orlando / Daytona Beach areas), Tampa/Lakeland area, Birmingham–Hoover area, west suburban Detroit, and Bakersfield. We will continue to create one of the best atmospheres in college football. Astoundingly, a few months later the basketball arena opened its doors, too — making UCF the first school to claim the feat of opening a football and basketball facility in the same year. The construction of the on-campus facility has been the ultimate game changer. I believe it’s the single most important moment in our history because it’s become a symbol of what UCF was, is and will always be.

BMO Stadium is home to the 2022 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield Champions LAFC team, as well as the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Angel City Football Club (ACFC). ACFC made its NWSL debut last season and led the NWSL in attendance in 2022, averaging more than 19,000 fans per game for its inaugural season. ACFC is also led by one of the largest women-led ownership groups in professional sports, aligning with BMO’s long-standing commitment to equity in sports, according to the financial provider. The Knights and their fans have been on the highest of highs in the last half-decade. Arguably the most visible and fastest growing program in NCAA Football, UCF has long been a hidden gem among college game-day experiences. However, the latest round of popularity has only helped this notoriety grow even further into the mainstream.

Jack Russell served its purpose very well for several decades, but the new facility provides fans a spacious, modern park with great sight-lines and a walk-around concourse to check out the action from all angles. While not eclipsing the beautiful spring parks in, say, Surprise, Scottsdale, Orlando or Jupiter, it is a beautiful new addition to the spring scene in the Sunshine State, and is as nice as any park in the Florida State League. The Phillies’ impressive new stadium in Philadelphia was designed by an architectural team including Ewing Cole and HOK, with the former having the lead role. In Clearwater, the roles of these two architectural firms were reversed, as HOK spearheaded the effort in Florida. Hunt Construction Group, the dominant player in sports-facility construction, was the general contractor for both stadiums.

The stadium continued to use its old name for the past 2 1/2 seasons while searching for a new sponsor. The stadium is situated at Candlestick Point on the western shore of the San Francisco Bay. Due to its location next to the bay, strong winds often swirl down into the stadium, creating interesting playing conditions. At the time of its construction in the late 1950s, the stadium site was the cheapest plot of land available in the city that was suitable for a sports stadium.

The 45,323-seat Bright House Networks Stadium remains one of the newest in the country. The $55 million stadium is one of many modern amenities on the north end of UCF's main campus in East Orlando. The north end also features the 10,000-seat UCF Arena, 2,000 beds of student housing and several restaurants and shops. All of the systems that eventually came to be owned by Bright House Networks were previously owned by the Time Warner Entertainment–Advance/Newhouse Partnership.

While the answer isn’t a resounding yes, there are many areas in which the park delivers the goods very well. There might even be the first College Football Playoff game inside that stadium. Students who attended that first game 16 years ago now come as parents with future Knights in tow. The Kenneth G. Dixon Athletic Village transcends the experience for all, including fans.

Located on 25 acres, the FBC Mortgage Stadium (formerly known as Spectrum Stadium and Bright House Stadium)  seats 45,301 and serves as the crown jewel of the University of Central Florida’s growing Athletics Village. The stadium’s west side features the four-level Roth Tower which includes 24 luxury suites accessible by private elevator. In addition, it houses an 8,200-square-foot Club Lounge that seats more than 800, a spacious press box, and administrative suites. The stadium provides ample ADA seating for more than 450 wheelchairs and more than 18,000 square feet of locker room space for coaches, sports medicine, and equipment storage.

As the Bowers walked back downstairs before lunch, Pierce was adamant the tight end make a quick pit stop by The Raider Image. He wanted to make sure he had enough new swag before he met Raider Nation for the first time. Bowers decided to go with a classic look, picking up a silver Starter Secret Weapon bomber jacket and a Raiders golf hat. "They would always open up the gates to bring youth football players in," said Warren Bowers, Brock's father.

A trip to a Knights football game at the “Bounce House” reveals that the college football experience is alive and well on the campus of UCF. From the tailgating all across campus to the in-game fan interaction, the average uninitiated fan who isn’t familiar with the Knights will be surprised by this atmosphere. Candlestick Park is an outdoor sports and entertainment stadium originally built as the home of the San Francisco Giants, and is the current home of the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. According to the terms of the deal, UCF has the right to terminate it at any time if FBC misses a payment. UCF's Board of Trustees approved the name change Tuesday, agreeing to a 10-year, $19.5 million deal with Orlando-based mortgage lender, FBC Mortgage. There to greet them was Head Coach Antonio Pierce, who then introduced the family to General Manager Tom Telesco and Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly. They instead traded back to No. 11 and selected tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu.

By far the star of the concessions at FBC Mortgage Stadium is Four Rivers BBQ; this central Florida BBQ restaurant has become a local favorite and can now be found at UCF football games. The facility has a longtime nickname of The Bounce House, as it was found to be susceptible to considerable shaking when its crowd jumps in unison. Although it was stated that the stadium was structurally sound and that this effect would not cause long-term damage to the facility, measures were undertaken following the stadium's inaugural season to reduce these effects. The Raiders' first-round pick and his parents boarded a non-stop, hour long flight from the Bay to Las Vegas the next day. His parents expressed their gratitude with the much shorter travel time to Las Vegas than Athens, Georgia, where their son won two national championships.

The stadium also is the home of the NWSL's Angel City FC.

This march starts in the tailgating areas near Addition Financial Arena and proceeds into the stadium after marching past the fans outside. The pre-game tailgating is incredibly vast, covering nearly every open lot and green space on campus for hours before the game even starts, reaching from the lots at the stadium itself all the way across campus to the far corners of the academic buildings. In 2023, the Knights started offering collectible souvenir cups for $10 featuring the game poster for each matchup on them as well, making for a fun collectible to accumulate during the season. Standard stadium fare is also easy to find, as are other local favorites like Kelly’s Ice Cream.

Introducing the 2024 Raiders Draft Class

Fortunately, Los Angeles offers many activities to enjoy solo or with a companion. Perhaps your mother would relish the chance to peruse the chocolate room at the Ed Ruscha retrospective at LACMA, free from the worry of children trying to lick the walls. Or maybe she’d enjoy a sound bath, waterfall hike, forest bathing session at one of L.A.’s stunning botanic gardens or a post-bedtime comedy show. On a day dedicated to celebrating mothers, carving out a little “me time” can be a valuable opportunity for self-care and relaxation. The stadium is next door to the 99-year-old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park, immediately south of downtown Los Angeles.

If you sit in the main seating bowl, as opposed to the grassy berms in left field and right field, note that the closer you are to the field, the less air circulation you’ll encounter. The all time spring training attendance record for BayCare Ballpark was set on March 17, 2019 when 11,340 saw the Yankees defeat the Phillies 7-3. The Big East Conference held its championship tournament at BayCare Ballpark in 2006 and from 2008 to 2013. Notre Dame defeated Louisville 7–0 on May 27, 2006, to win the 2006 championship.[15] Louisville defeated Cincinnati 6–3 to win the 2008 championship on May 24, 2008.[16] In 2009, Louisville again won the tournament.[17] In 2010, St. John's won the title, defeating UConn 3–0 in the championship game.

But unlike a number of other spring-time ballparks, Bright House Network Field receives regular use throughout the summer. That’s because once the big Phillies go north at the end of spring training, the team’s Florida State League team uses the new facility throughout the regular season. That team changed its name as it moved into the park, and what were once the Clearwater Phillies became the Clearwater Threshers. During construction, the stadium's naming rights were sold to cable provider Bright House Networks, naming the facility Bright House Networks Stadium.

LAFC announced the new naming rights deal Thursday for the five-year-old arena, which was built by the expansion Major League Soccer Club. Although the Knights lost their first on-campus home game, they finished the remainder of the stadium's inaugural season undefeated, including the Conference USA home opener against Memphis. The Knights hosted the 2007 C-USA Championship at their new stadium, defeating the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in front of a crowd of 44,128. In 2010, the Knights again hosted the C-USA Championship, defeating the SMU Mustangs 17–7 before a crowd of 41,045. The highest attendance for games played at Bright House Networks Stadium against the Knights have included the University of South Florida Bulls, the Miami Hurricanes, and in 2010, the East Carolina Pirates. There are 10 ticket windows; four on the east, four on the west, and two will call windows on the south side of the stadium.

Legend also has it that city officials and stadium designers made visits to the site during the morning when the breezes are usually calm, but not during the late afternoon and evening when the winds frequently pick up quite dramatically, even on clear sunny days. Make no mistake about it, BHN Field is located in an exceedingly congested area of Clearwater, very close to the intersection of the heavily used U.S. 19 and Drew Street. Making matters worse, Route 19 is in a perpetual state of “improvement,” making this area quite a construction-zone mess.

The Fall of the House of Usher review: Mike Flanagans most ambitious horror story yet

the fall of the house of usher movie

There were some great moments — particularly when you learn the horrific ways that characters die — but it wasn’t clear how those different pieces fit together. Part of the problem is that there’s just a lot here; characters were being killed off before I even had a real sense of who they were and how they fit into the family. But after some time (for me, it was the fourth episode when things clicked), the scope of the show comes into focus and really hits its groove.

the fall of the house of usher movie

Cast and characters

But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife.

Sources of inspiration

Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. Because of this, it starts out slowly as the show attempts to introduce all of its various parts.

Is it a worthwhile adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s work?

“You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. Feast your eyes on a new clip above and learn more about the limited series below. Late one stormy night, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an investigator named C. All of these nightmarish visions are attached to the family drama that Usher offers up for Dupin, giving the season a clever episodic structure in that each chapter intertwines a different Poe source into the overall saga of the Ushers. A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination.

Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. “The Fall of the House of Usher” updates the work of Edgar Allan Poe for the era of Big Pharma, turning his most famous tales into a sprawling story of the decline of a wealthy American family. It’s “Succession” meets The Tell-Tale Heart, a story of vengeance, power, betrayal, and bloody parts. Since The Haunting of Hill House debuted in 2018, Mike Flanagan has steadily built up an impressively diverse anthology of limited series on Netflix, with releases coming on a near-annual basis.

Limited Series – The Fall of the House of Usher

The intervening years have included a romantic puzzle box, a small-town vampire story, and a collection of teen ghost stories. But with The Fall of the House of Usher — which is likely the final collaboration between Flanagan and Netflix — the showrunner has created his most ambitious story yet. It’s still the slow-burning human drama fans have come to expect, but this time, it tells a much more complex story that touches on everything from AI to the opioid epidemic, all viewed through the lens of gothic horror. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake.

The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. The narrator and Roderick place her in a tomb despite her flushed, lively appearance. In the tale's conclusion, Madeline escapes from the tomb and returns to Roderick, scaring him to death. Fearing that her body will be exhumed for medical study, Roderick insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried.

These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way. What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks.

That combination, of course, is exactly what Flanagan is known for, and it remains strong in House of Usher... During a heated argument with Roderick, Madeline suddenly falls into catalepsy, a condition in which its sufferers appear dead. Roderick knows that she is still alive, but convinces Winthrop that she is dead and rushes to have her entombed in the family crypt beneath the house. As Philip is preparing to leave following the entombment, the butler, Bristol (Harry Ellerbe), lets slip that Madeline suffered from catalepsy.

A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. Roderick and Madeline are twins and the two share an incommunicable connection that critics conclude may be either incestuous or metaphysical,[7] as two individuals in an extra-sensory relationship embodying a single entity. To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death.

the fall of the house of usher movie

Like some of Flanagan’s previous work — Hill House is based on a Shirley Jackson novel and Bly Manor a story by Henry James — House of Usher is the kind of adaption that uses the source material as a skeleton to build something entirely new upon. What follows is Roderick explaining the story of how all of his adult children died in a short span of time and how it all relates to him and a deal he made with a mysterious woman (Carla Gugino) at a bar in 1980. Roderick became hugely successful thanks to the help of some kind of dark entity, and now, years later, he (and his family) is paying the price in very bloody fashion.

Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the House of Usher, a desolate mansion surrounded by a murky swamp, to see his fiancée Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). Roderick foresees the family evils being propagated into future generations with a marriage to Madeline and vehemently discourages the union. Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him.

In 1956, NBC Matinee Theater on US television broadcast The Fall of the House of Usher starring Marshall Thompson and Tom Tryon for episode 197. In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion.

When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed.

While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal. Even something as seemingly simple as an ignored text message becomes a powerfully tragic moment, full of both terror and heartbreak.

Character descriptions

But things start to get out of control after receiving a visit from his girlfriend, who will do everything to get him out of that macabre place. Presenting vintage Poe stories filtered through Mike Flanagan's deliciously dark lens, The Fall of the House of Usher will get a rise out of horror fans.

Gunning’s breakout role could also boost the chances of her co-star Nava Mau, who plays the love interest Teri, garnering attention for her performance. In 2002, Ken Russell produced a horror comedy version titles The Fall of the Louse of Usher. In 1989, The House of Usher was a film produced by American, British, and Canadian companies starring Oliver Reed. In the Roger Corman film from 1960, released in the United States as House of Usher, Vincent Price starred as Roderick Usher, Myrna Fahey as Madeline and Mark Damon as Philip Winthrop, Madeline's fiancé. The film was Corman's first in a series of eight films inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

The film was the first of eight Corman/Poe feature films and stars Vincent Price, Myrna Fahey, Mark Damon and Harry Ellerbe. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor. (Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others.

The narrator helps Roderick put Madeline's body in the tomb, whereupon the narrator realizes that Madeline and Roderick are twins. The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death. Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated. Mike Flanagan takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe in The Fall of the House of Usher, his final spooky outing at Netflix.

The eight-episode series, which premieres to the streamer on Thursday, October 12, follows the bleak, gory, and darkly comedic downfall of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his richly diverse (and richly despicable) family. Once that initial confusion is out of the way, part of what makes it work is how each episode manages to tell its own self-contained story about the victim in question while also steadily advancing the overarching tale of what Roderick did to deserve this fate. The mystery, which seems so obvious early on, becomes more complicated and even darker than I first imagined.

He witnesses Madeline's reemergence and the subsequent, simultaneous death of the twins. The narrator is the only character to escape the House of Usher, which he views as it cracks and sinks into the mountain lake. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house.

His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence.

English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names. When the young and trendy Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) decides to host an exclusive sex-and-drugs party at one of dad’s old factories in an abbey, readers of The Masque of the Red Death will know it’s going to be a gruesome scene. However, Flanagan is smart enough to shift the Poe narratives ever so slightly for a modern audience. His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company.

A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added. As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with.

The cast is made up of Flanagan regulars who make up for a delightfully despicable group of asshole millionaires. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places. Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter.
